Compaction by Lift

Fill is placed in controlled lifts — typically 8–12 inches loose — and compacted to the density specified in the geotechnical report. We track lift count and test frequency per spec.

Moisture Conditioning

Florida soils often arrive too wet or too dry to compact to specification. We aeriate or disc wet material, add water to dry fill, and manage windrow time to hit the Proctor optimum moisture range.

Unsuitable Soil Removal & Replacement

Organics, muck, and weak clays are removed to the limits defined by the geotechnical engineer, stockpiled or disposed of off-site, and replaced with documented, tested fill.

Import Fill Procurement & Placement

When onsite material is insufficient or substandard, we source clean structural fill from approved borrow sites. Loads are tracked, tested, and documented per project requirements.

Embankment & Roadway Subbase Construction

Engineered embankments for roads, parking areas, and retention pond berms built to the compaction and geometry specified in the civil drawings.

Proof-Rolling & Subgrade Acceptance

Before any paving, structural, or utility work begins, we proof-roll with a loaded tandem truck and coordinate the geotechnical engineer's acceptance walk.

Compaction Test Coordination

We schedule density testing with the owner's geotechnical consultant and respond to failing tests immediately — re-compacting, moisture conditioning, or removing and replacing material per the spec.

Mass Balance & Volume Analysis

We run a cut-to-fill calculation against the grading plan. If the site doesn't balance, we identify the import or export volume and price it into the bid — no surprises later.

Geotech & Soil Review

Boring logs and Proctor test data are reviewed to understand soil classification, compaction targets, and any zones of unsuitable material that need to be addressed.

Clearing & Mass Excavation

Once SWPPP controls are in place, clearing and bulk excavation begin. Cut material is evaluated: usable fill is stockpiled, unsuitable material is segregated for disposal.

Fill Placement & Compaction

Fill is spread in controlled lifts, moisture conditioned, and compacted to specification. Density tests are scheduled at the frequency required by the geotechnical report and project specs.

Subgrade Acceptance & Handoff

Proof-roll is performed, test results are compiled, and passing density logs are submitted to the GC and owner. Subgrade is accepted before the next trade mobilizes.

What does "cut-to-fill balance" mean and why does it matter?+

A balanced site uses the soil cut from high areas to fill the low areas — minimizing the need to import or export material. Imbalanced earthwork inflates cost because every truck of imported fill or exported spoil carries a haul cost on top of the material price. We run the mass balance calculation during estimating so the bid reflects the true volume picture.

How do you control compaction in Florida's variable soils?+

Each fill lift is spread to the thickness specified in the geotechnical report — typically 8 to 12 inches — and compacted with a sheepsfoot, pad foot, or smooth drum roller matched to the soil type. Moisture content is managed before compacting. We coordinate density testing at the required frequency and respond to failing tests immediately.

What happens when unsuitable material is found during earthwork?+

When muck, organics, or soft clays are encountered that weren't captured in the borings, we stop filling, document the extent with photos and survey shots, and notify the GC and geotechnical engineer. Material is over-excavated to firm ground, and the replacement fill is tested before we continue.

Can you source import fill if the site doesn't have enough onsite material?+

Yes. We work with known borrow sites throughout Central Florida. Fill sources are evaluated for material quality — gradation, plasticity, and organic content — before we commit to a source. Load tickets and testing data are provided when the project requires documentation.

What compaction specification do you typically work to?+

Most commercial earthwork specs call for 95% of the maximum dry density per ASTM D1557 (Modified Proctor) for structural fill zones, and 98% directly beneath pavement subbase. We confirm the project-specific requirements with the geotechnical report before work begins.

How is earthwork typically priced?+

Mass earthwork is usually priced as a combination of unit prices (cubic yard bank measure for cut and fill) and lump-sum items (unsuitable removal allowances, import fill, erosion controls). We prefer to walk the site and review borings before finalizing the bid form.
