How We Execute Underground Utility Work

Sunshine 811 Locate & Pre-Construction Meeting

All underground utilities are marked and verified via Sunshine 811 before any excavation begins. We conduct a pre-construction meeting with the GC and utility authorities to review sequence, tie-in points, and shutoff procedures.

Trench Excavation & Bedding

Trenches are excavated to the required depth and width. Pipe bedding material is placed and screeded to proper grade, verified by a crew member before pipe is set.

Pipe Installation & Structure Setting

Pipe sections, manholes, valve vaults, and junction boxes are set in sequence. Joints, gaskets, and connections are inspected as work progresses.

Backfill, Compaction & Surface Restoration

Select fill is placed in controlled lifts and compacted. Density testing is performed per the project geotech report. Surface restoration — base rock, pavement, or sod — follows promptly to reduce open-trench time.

Testing, Punch-List & As-Builts

Pressure tests and video inspections are conducted, punch-list items corrected, and as-built drawings delivered to the engineer and authority of record before substantial completion sign-off.

What is Sunshine 811 and why does it matter on every job?+
Sunshine 811 is Florida's One Call system. State law (F.S. §556) requires that all underground excavation be preceded by a locate request through 811. Utility owners then mark the approximate location of buried lines within two business days. We submit the ticket, confirm marks, and manage re-notification for work extending beyond the notice period.
Can you coordinate direct utility authority tie-ins for water and sewer?+
Yes. We work directly with local utility authorities — including county water-sewer departments and private providers — to schedule inspections, chlorination, testing, and final tie-in to the distribution system. We track the required submittals and witness tests as needed.
What pipe materials do you work with?+
Our crews are experienced with PVC (SDR, C-900, C-905), ductile iron (DI), reinforced concrete pipe (RCP), HDPE, and corrugated metal pipe. Material selection is driven by the engineer's specifications and local authority standards.
How do you handle a utility conflict discovered during excavation?+
When a conflict is uncovered that wasn't shown on the design documents, we stop work in that area, photograph and document the condition, notify the GC and engineer immediately, and provide field data to support a resolution. We do not proceed until a solution is approved to avoid cost exposure for all parties.
Do you perform post-construction CCTV video on gravity sewer?+
Yes. We coordinate CCTV video inspection of all gravity sewer mains prior to final acceptance. Video reports are reviewed for any defects, grade issues, or joint infiltration before closeout.
What compaction standards do you follow for trench backfill?+
Backfill compaction requirements vary by project — typically 95–98% of maximum dry density per AASHTO T-99 or T-180, depending on location under pavement or in open areas. We coordinate density testing with the project's geotechnical laboratory and correct any failing lifts before proceeding.
